FU Tools is a collection of subsystems and houserules for the Freeform Universal RPG that adds tactical depth and some specifity, while trying to maintain the narrative flexibility of FU Classic. I like Freeform Universal, it is one of my favourite rulesets. But I found some areas too loose for my liking. Over the years I ran some oneshots and this is essentially my notes and ideas from various games, compiled into a single document.

In FU Tools you can find:

  • A dice pool alternative to standard FU resolution
  • Body/Mind point tracking for damage
  • More detailed weapon and armor systems
  • Kits for flexible gear management
  • A light powers and magic framework
  • And more, see TOC on the right.

Each system comes from one of my FU home games that covered a variety of genres. While the rules inside can be used independently and combined as you want, they do riff off each other and mesh together.

All this can be considered Beta quality. I played with it, but its not a coherent game on its own. There are very few examples and some parts are not fleshed out a lot. No editor has seen it. Consider it a WIP, would love your feedback and sugestions for improvement.

Compatible with FU Classic rules. Released under CC BY 4.0.

Fantastic!
Would definitely work with FU 2 Beta as well!

Thanks for the kind comment. Yes it would, but I couldn't reference it as it isn't out and there are some parallel developments, like the dice pool. :-)

You might also take a look at some of Nathan Russell/Peril Planet's FU2E-adjacent designs - Neon City Overdrive, Star Scoundrels, or the ones he wrote for Osprey, Hard City, and Tomorrow City.

Own them all! Love his work, they are among my favourite games. But Action Tales isn't open and I did FU long before Action Tales, so this is where the material comes from.

Having spoken to Nathan on a few occasions, including recording an interview with him for a local con, I don't think he would mind you putting out a free PDF of optional rules for Action Tales.

I imagine if you contacted him using the form here, he'd even give you express permission.
